The situation
Picture a small firm with a suite on an upper floor of a Financial District office tower. An employee has left, and their suite key was not returned. The building's landlord controls the base-building doors and holds a master key for every suite, which must keep working for security and cleaning staff.
What the call sounds like
The office manager explains which doors the missing key opened: the suite entrance, a file room and a supply cupboard. The dispatcher asks whether the suite locks are on the building's master-key system. They are, so the rekey needs to be coordinated with building management.
The work
After management confirms authorization and provides the system details, the technician rekeys the three cylinders to a new change key that still works with the building master. The new keys are stamped with numbers, and the office manager starts a simple key register listing who holds which key.
Timing
Because offices downtown are busy during the day, the work is scheduled for early morning before staff arrive. Security at the building's loading dock is notified in advance so the technician can get in.
