Fobs, keys and who cancels what
In most Toronto condos, fobs are managed by the building, so the first call is to the concierge or management office to deactivate the lost fob and issue a new one. Your unit door key is usually yours to manage. If the fob was lost together with your unit key, and your address could be identified, rekey your unit lock as well. Ask management whether they keep a copy of your unit key and whether they need a new one after the rekey.
A practical checklist
- Report the fob to the condo concierge or property manager for deactivation.
- Identify whether the apartment lock is mechanical, electronic, or part of a master system.
- Ask who can authorize a rekey or replacement cylinder.
- Update household, parking, locker, and mailbox access records.
Common mistake to avoid
Deactivating a fob does not invalidate a copied apartment key, garage remote, or mailbox key.

High-rise buildings often have separate access owners for lobby, elevator, parking, suite, and mailbox; handle each layer deliberately.
What to cancel and when
Report the lost fob to the concierge or property manager straight away so they can deactivate it. A working fob can open the lobby, parking and amenities, so the risk is broader than the suite.
Does the suite lock need to change?
If the fob only opens common areas, your suite lock may not need changing. If your keys were on the same ring, consider rekeying. The condominium may also require approval for a lock change.

What to say to the desk
"Hello, I lost a fob for unit 1204. Please deactivate fob number ending 3391 and let me know how to get a replacement. Are there fees or forms?" Write down the time you called and the name of the person who took the message. If the building uses a management portal, submit the request there as well so there is a record. Ask when a replacement will be ready and whether a temporary fob is available.
